You've gone through several retail furniture stores in your area and you haven't found a wardrobe that quite suits your needs. What option do you have left? Well, have you ever considered designing your own wardrobe and getting it custom built? You'll have the opportunity to unleash your creativity, making the process a very rewarding experience. Of course, if you've never done this before, it can be a daunting idea. In this article, I'll outline some basic steps to help you through the process and hopefully alleviate any doubts you have.
Assuming that you've identified the room in your home in which you intend to place your wardrobe, the first step is to make measurements of the area in the room. This way, you know the size limitations you have to deal with. Next step is to figure out the dimensions of the wardrobe opening. Part of this step is to decide the type of doors you want for the wardrobe - whether to go for a hinged or sliding door. The type of doors might be limited by the space available in your room - you need to take into account of convenient access to the wardrobe.

For step 3, you need to ask yourself, "How many people intend to use the wardrobe?". The answer to this question then determines the number of sections you're going to have for the wardrobe. For example, if sharing with a partner, you would likely have a 'His' and 'Her' section.
Next step involves working out the wardrobe components you need in order to store your clothes in the appropriate manner (i.e. easy to access, avoid creasing, well organised). Components include drawers (for storing under-garments and socks), shelves (for storing t-shirts), half hanging (for office shirts), pants hanging and full hanging (for coats and dresses), belt racks, tie racks and shoe racks.
Finally, the last step is designing the wardrobe layout based on the components you have chosen from the previous step. This is where you can inject some of your creative thinking. Please keep in mind that at the same time, you'll still want to maximize the available wardrobe space you have so maintaining practicality.
After the above planning stage, if you are confident and feel like experimenting, you can choose to go full out and construct the wardrobe yourself, especially if the wardrobe you have in mind is fairly simple. Otherwise, there are online store which offer do-it-yourself flat-pack kits for assembly. On these sites, you can select different design layouts you want and have them deliver the packs to you.
